On June 23, 2024, the Campos Memorial Mini Stadium on Lagos Island was filled with excitement, energy, and passion as the 8th edition of the Prince Michael Atobatele Foundation (PMAF) Annual Football Competition kicked off. This event, now a beloved tradition, is not just a sports event; it’s a celebration of the enduring legacy of Prince Michael Atobatele, fondly known as Uzii, his love for football, and his unwavering belief in the power of community. This year’s tournament was particularly special, as it marked what would have been Uzii’s 30th birthday. The event was a testament to how his spirit lives on, motivating young athletes to chase their dreams and reminding us all of the profound impact one person’s passion can have on the world.
The event began with six teams, each consisting of young talents eager to showcase their skills and honor Uzii’s memory. The competition was fierce, with each team playing with incredible spirit and determination. From the opening whistle to the final goal, the stadium buzzed with excitement as spectators cheered on their favorite teams.
One of the standout moments was the championship match between Bamische Gold Academy and Varsity Football Academy. The game was a nail-biter, with brilliant plays and relentless effort from both teams. In the end, Bamische Gold Academy won 2-1, securing their place as champions of the under-16 boys’ tournament. Their triumph was not just a sporting victory but a celebration of dedication, teamwork, and the spirit of Uzii.
Another highlight of the day was the Legacy Match, featuring Uzii’s friends who came together to honor him in the most heartfelt way. This match wasn’t just about football—it was about friendship, memories, and the shared love for a man who touched so many lives. The players, some of whom hadn’t seen each other in years, reunited on the field to honor Uzii’s memory and celebrate his life in the way he would have loved most.
